The STARRETT 57330 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 3/16 inches thick, 1/2 inch wide, and 36 inches long. A2 tool steel offers excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment and good toughness after hardening, making it a go-to material for dies, punches, gauges, and precision tooling components. This flat stock is ground to close tolerances — thickness held to plus or minus 0.001 inches and width held to plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches — so it arrives ready for layout, machining, or direct use in toolroom applications. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance trades rely on this stock for fabricating or repairing precision components.
This flat stock is suited for toolroom, job shop, and industrial maintenance environments where close-tolerance, hardenable steel stock is required. Common applications include blanks for cutting tools, jig components, fixture rails, wear plates, and custom punches or dies. The 36-inch length provides practical stock for multiple short-run parts. Its air-hardening characteristic means less distortion risk compared to oil-hardening grades, which is important when dimensional accuracy after heat treat is critical.
Designed as a standard A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for toolroom fabrication, die and punch manufacture, and precision fixture components where a hardenable, ground-finish steel bar is required.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists or tool-and-die tradespeople using appropriate metalworking equipment. Follow established heat-treating procedures for AISI A2 steel per the material specification when hardening is required. Wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and cut-resistant gloves when handling and cutting steel bar stock. Inspect stock dimensions against your application tolerances before machining to finished size.
