The STARRETT 54968 is a low carbon steel flat stock bar cut to 24 inches in length, 1-1/4 inches wide, and 3/8 inch thick. It is produced to AISI Type C1018 material specification, a widely used low carbon steel grade valued for its machinability, weldability, and consistent mechanical properties. This flat stock is held to tight dimensional tolerances — thickness and squareness are controlled to plus or minus 0.001 inch, and width tolerance is held to plus 0.000 to 0.005 inch. Machinists, fabricators, maintenance technicians, and millwrights use this stock for brackets, guides, spacers, wear plates, and general fabrication work in industrial and commercial settings.
This flat bar is suited for light to medium fabrication applications where a readily machinable, weldable steel is required. Typical uses include custom brackets, shims, reinforcement plates, slide components, and tool fixtures. The C1018 specification makes it compatible with common machining operations including drilling, tapping, milling, and turning without special tooling. It is appropriate for applications that do not require high hardness or heat treatment. The piece weight of approximately 3.18 pounds makes it manageable for bench and floor work.
Designed as a general-purpose C1018 low carbon steel flat bar for fabrication, maintenance repair, and machine shop applications where AISI C1018 material specification is required.
Handle cut steel stock with appropriate gloves to avoid burrs on edges and ends. Deburr all machined and cut surfaces before final assembly or installation in moving assemblies. Welding C1018 steel typically requires no preheat at this thickness, but follow applicable AWS D1.1 structural welding guidelines for the specific application. Verify final dimensions against your print before machining, as the plus 0.625 inch length tolerance means the received piece may be slightly longer than 24 inches.
