The STARRETT 54754 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 0.5 inches thick, 5 inches wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is a versatile cold-work die steel known for its good dimensional stability during heat treat, moderate wear resistance, and toughness. This stock ships in an annealed condition and is intended for machining, grinding, and fabrication prior to hardening. Typical users are tool and die makers, machinists, and industrial maintenance shops that need a reliable, machinable blank they can finish to final geometry before air hardening to working hardness.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, forming tools, and general tooling applications where controlled distortion during hardening is a priority. The 0.5 inches by 5 inches cross-section provides a substantial starting blank for medium to large tooling components. At 18 inches in length, a single bar yields multiple blanks for lower-volume tooling jobs or a single large workpiece.
Designed as a standard AISI A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock blank suitable for cold-work tooling, die-making, and precision machining applications requiring controlled heat-treat distortion.
Machining and fabrication should be completed prior to the air-hardening heat treat cycle; consult a qualified heat treater or tool steel reference for appropriate austenitizing and tempering parameters for A2 steel. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and machine guarding when cutting, grinding, or milling tool steel stock. Ensure all cutting tools are rated for hardened or semi-hard ferrous materials if working the stock after any preliminary hardening steps.
