The STARRETT 54547 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, punch fabrication, and precision machining applications. Measuring 0.125 inches thick, 1.25 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this bar is cut to a consistent rectangular profile with tight dimensional tolerances held throughout. Thickness and squareness are controlled to plus or minus 0.001 inches, and width is held to a plus 0.000 to 0.005 inch tolerance. The AISI A2 tool steel composition provides good wear resistance and dimensional stability through the air-hardening heat treatment process, making it a reliable choice for toolroom stock.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and fixtures in job shops, tool and die operations, and precision manufacturing environments. The 36-inch length provides a practical starting blank for layout and machining before hardening. Machinists and toolmakers working in annealed condition will find the stock dimensioned consistently enough to go directly to layout. The weight of 1.83 pounds makes it easy to handle at the bench or on a surface plate.
Designed as a standard toolroom flat stock blank compatible with conventional milling, grinding, EDM, and heat-treating processes used in A2 tool steel fabrication workflows.
Cutting, grinding, and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers familiar with AISI A2 specifications. Always follow the steel manufacturer's recommended annealing, hardening, and tempering temperature ranges for A2 material. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when cutting or grinding tool steel. Consult applicable shop safety codes and material data sheets before beginning thermal processing.
