The STARRETT 54541 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 2 inches thick, 4 inches wide, and 36 inches long. O1 tool steel is a general-purpose oil-hardening grade known for good machinability in the annealed state and for holding a sharp, stable edge after heat treatment. This flat stock is produced to tight dimensional tolerances, making it a reliable starting material for toolmakers, die makers, and machine shops fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and cutting tools. At 81.6 pounds per bar, it is a heavy, full-size section suited for larger tool and die applications.
This flat stock is used in industrial and tool room environments where close-tolerance raw material is required before heat treating and finish grinding. Typical applications include blanking dies, forming dies, short-run punches, and precision fixtures. The 36-inch length provides standard stock for saw-cutting multiple blanks. It is appropriate for both job shop and in-house tool room use wherever O1 oil-hardening tool steel is specified by print or process.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock for general tool and die fabrication requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists using appropriate metal-cutting equipment. Wear proper PPE including eye protection and cut-resistant gloves when handling and sawing heavy steel bar stock. O1 tool steel must be hardened and tempered per established heat treat procedures before use in cutting or forming applications. Do not attempt to weld O1 tool steel without following qualified pre-heat and post-heat procedures appropriate to the application.
