The STARRETT 54411 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock measures 3/8 inch thick, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, and weighs 5.74 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for applications that demand close dimensional control before and after heat treating. Machinists, tool and die makers, and precision fabricators use O1 stock when a readily available oil-hardening grade is required for punches, dies, gauges, and similar tooling components.
This flat bar is suited for job shops, tool rooms, and production environments where O1 tool steel is specified for its moderate toughness, good machinability in the annealed state, and predictable oil-quench hardening response. The 36-inch length is a standard bar length for bench and bridgeport-style machining operations. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch across all edges, supporting accurate layout and fixturing directly from stock without additional grinding in many applications.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision fabrication applications requiring oil-quench hardenable steel stock.
Cutting, grinding, and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed with appropriate metalworking equipment and personal protective equipment. Heat treating O1 steel requires controlled furnace equipment and proper quenching procedures and should be carried out by qualified personnel familiar with tool steel processing. Consult the applicable material safety data sheet when grinding or cutting. All layout and machining work should be completed prior to hardening, as stock dimensions will change slightly during heat treatment.
