The STARRETT 54303 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 0.125 inches thick, 1.5 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat stock is used for toolmaking, die work, jigs, fixtures, and precision machined components where consistent geometry and tight tolerances are required. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, length tolerance is plus 0.015 inches, and width tolerance runs from 0 to minus 0.005 inches. At 2.23 pounds, the bar is ready to cut, machine, and heat treat in a standard oil-quench process. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance shops specify O1 for its predictable hardening response and good dimensional stability.
O1 tool steel flat stock is used in job shops, manufacturing facilities, and maintenance departments for fabricating punches, dies, cutting tools, gauges, and wear parts. The 36-inch length allows multiple blanks to be cut from a single bar, reducing setup time. This stock is suited for applications where the finished component will be oil-hardened and tempered to achieve working hardness. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch across all edges, supporting accurate layout and machining without additional dressing.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision fabrication applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting and machining should be performed with appropriate tooling rated for tool steel stock. Oil-hardening heat treatment requires proper temperature control and a suitable quench oil bath — follow established metallurgical procedures and applicable shop safety protocols. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or heat treating tool steel. Consult material safety data for handling guidance when working with cutting fluids or quench oils.
