The STARRETT 54257 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 1/16 inch thick, 1/2 inch wide, and 36 inches long. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specifications, this flat stock is designed for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who need a reliable, tight-tolerance steel blank ready for custom tooling, punches, dies, gauges, and similar precision components. The material ships in an annealed state, allowing it to be machined, ground, and shaped before oil-hardening heat treatment. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inch, supporting precision layout and close-fit applications.
O1 tool steel flat stock is a standard material in tool and die shops, maintenance departments, and machine shops. It is used to fabricate custom cutting tools, form dies, wear plates, scraper blades, and fixtures. The 36-inch length is a common mill-length bar suitable for single-piece or multi-piece blanking. This bar is appropriate for both small-shop and production-floor use wherever AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel is called for by design or specification.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening flat stock blank for use in tool and die fabrication, fixture building, and precision machining applications requiring oil-hardening tool steel.
O1 tool steel flat stock is worked by machinists and tool and die makers using conventional milling, grinding, and sawing equipment. Material should be machined in the annealed condition before hardening. Oil-hardening heat treatment should follow the material supplier guidelines for AISI O1 and applicable shop procedures. Handle cut edges with care, as burrs and sharp corners are common after sawing or shearing.
