The STARRETT 54205 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar sized at 7/8 inch thick, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long. O1 is an AISI-grade oil-hardening tool steel widely used in toolmaking, die making, and precision machining applications where controlled hardness and dimensional accuracy are required. The bar ships at 6.69 pounds and is held to tight tolerances: thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches, width tolerance of minus 0 to minus 0.005 inches, and length tolerance of plus 0.250 inches. Edge squareness is held to 0.003 inches per inch across all edges. Machinists, tool and die makers, and metalworking shops stock this material as a reliable starting blank for custom tooling.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and other precision tooling components that require oil-quench hardening. The 18-inch length and rectangular cross-section make it a practical blank for small to medium tooling projects in job shops, maintenance facilities, and production environments. It is supplied in an annealed condition, allowing it to be machined before hardening. After machining, oil quenching develops the hardness required for cutting and forming tool applications.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock blank for use in tool and die making, gauge fabrication, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
This material is typically worked by machinists and tool and die makers using conventional milling, grinding, and turning equipment. The bar should be machined to final form while in the annealed condition before oil-quench hardening. Heat treatment should follow established AISI O1 tool steel procedures for austenitizing temperature and quench medium. Always allow the workpiece to reach ambient temperature before taking final measurements to verify dimensional tolerances.
