The STARRETT 54148 is an O1 oil-hardening flat stock bar made from AISI Type O1 tool steel, a widely used cold-work tool steel valued for its dimensional stability and ease of hardening in oil quench. This flat stock measures 0.5 inches thick, 0.625 inches wide, and 18 inches long, with a thickness tolerance of plus or minus 0.001 inches and an edge squareness of 0.003 inches per inch. It is supplied in the annealed (soft) condition and is intended for machining, grinding, and fabrication before hardening. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers use this material to produce punches, dies, gauges, cutting tools, and similar toolroom components.

O1 flat stock in this size range is a standard toolroom staple for job shops, maintenance departments, and production toolrooms. The 0.5 inch by 0.625 inch cross section is well suited to making small punches, forming blades, and precision fixtures where tight dimensional control before heat treatment is required.
