The STARRETT 54141 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar used in toolmaking, die work, and precision machining applications. Cut to 7/16 inch thick, 1-1/2 inches wide, and 18 inches long, it ships ready for layout, machining, and heat treatment. The material meets AISI Type O1 specifications, making it a standard choice for punches, dies, gauges, and cutting tools where controlled hardening and good wear resistance are required. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, giving machinists a reliable starting dimension without additional cleanup grinding on the critical face.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool and die rooms, and maintenance departments that fabricate or repair tooling in-house. The 18-inch length works for most small die components and punch blanks. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance technicians are the primary users. The bar is supplied in the annealed condition and must be hardened by the end user using an oil-quench process consistent with AISI O1 procedures. It is not pre-hardened.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 tool steel flat stock suitable for fabricating tooling components in job shop, die room, and maintenance machining environments.
Tool and die makers and machinists should machine this bar to final profile before heat treatment, as grinding stock must account for distortion during oil quenching. Use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow established shop procedures when cutting or grinding tool steel. Heat treatment should be performed by qualified personnel following AISI O1 austenitizing and quench procedures. Consult applicable shop safety and fire codes when handling quench oils.
