The STARRETT 53523 is a dial drop indicator designed for precision dimensional measurement in shop, toolroom, and field service applications. It measures a range of 0 to 0.25 inches with a 0.001 inch graduation, allowing technicians to detect small surface variations, runout, and alignment deviations quickly and accurately. The 2-3/4 inch white dial features a 0-50-0 reading format and a no-glare satin finish for easy reading under shop lighting. The stainless steel stem measures 0.375 inches in diameter and 0.625 inches in length. Jeweled bearings provide consistent movement and extended service life. A lug back is standard, with a flat back included for mounting flexibility.
This dial drop indicator is suited for use in precision machining, fabrication, maintenance, and alignment tasks. Typical applications include checking shaft runout, verifying surface flatness, setting up fixtures, and inspecting part dimensions during production or overhaul work. It is commonly used by machinists, millwrights, maintenance technicians, and quality control personnel working with lathes, milling machines, surface plates, and magnetic base setups. Each revolution of the contact point advances the needle 0.1 inches, keeping readings easy to track across the full 0.25 inch range.
Designed as a standard AGD Group 2 dial drop indicator compatible with magnetic bases, indicator holders, and transfer stands accepting a 0.375 inch diameter stem.
Dial drop indicators are installed and used by machinists, millwrights, and metrology technicians. Secure the indicator firmly in a compatible holder or magnetic base before use to prevent movement errors. Avoid side-loading the stem during measurement, as this can affect accuracy and bearing life. Do not exceed the stated measurement range, as overtravel can damage the internal mechanism.
