The STARRETT 53400 is a dial drop indicator designed for precise linear displacement measurement in machine shop, maintenance, and quality control applications. It covers a measuring range of 0 to 0.25 inches with a dial graduation of 0.001 inches, giving technicians clear, repeatable readings on a 0-50-0 dial face. The 1-11/16 inch diameter white dial carries a no-glare satin finish and is protected by an unbreakable crystal. A jeweled bearing mechanism supports smooth stylus travel, and the stainless steel stem adds durability in shop environments. The built-in revolution counter tracks full stem cycles, reducing read errors during longer measurements.
The 53400 suits precision alignment, runout checks, surface flatness verification, and fixture setup work in machining, fabrication, and maintenance trades. The lug back mount makes it easy to attach to magnetic bases, transfer arms, and indicator holders commonly used on mills, lathes, and surface plates. A flat back is included in the package for setups that require a flat-mounted configuration. The sharp bezel and rugged construction hold up to repeated handling in production and field service environments.
Designed as an OEM-style dial drop indicator compatible with standard lug-back and flat-back indicator holders, magnetic bases, and transfer arms accepting a 0.375 inch stem diameter.
Installation and setup are typically performed by machinists, metrology technicians, or maintenance mechanics. Before mounting, ensure the indicator holder or magnetic base is firmly locked and the workpiece or machine spindle is stationary. Secure the lug back or flat back attachment snugly to prevent indicator slippage during measurement. Do not exceed the stated 0.25 inch travel range, as overtravel can damage the internal mechanism.
