The STARRETT 53312 is a dial drop indicator designed for precise linear measurement in shop, field, and maintenance applications. It covers a 0 to 5 inch measurement range with 0.001 inch graduations and a 0-100 dial reading scale, providing resolution suitable for dimensional inspection, runout checks, and surface comparison work. The 2-1/4 inch white dial face carries a no-glare satin finish and is protected by an unbreakable crystal. Jeweled bearings support smooth, repeatable spindle movement. The stainless steel stem measures 0.375 inches in diameter and 4.8125 inches in length. A built-in revolution counter tracks full-range travel across the 0.1 inch per revolution mechanism. The unit ships with both a lug back and a flat back included.

Mount using a dial indicator holder or magnetic base that accepts a 0.375 inch stem diameter. Ensure the spindle axis is perpendicular to the measured surface to avoid cosine error in readings. Do not exceed the stated 5 inch travel range, as forcing the spindle beyond its limit can damage the internal mechanism. No electrical connections or power sources are required for this instrument.
