The STARRETT 53292 is a dial drop indicator designed for precise linear measurement in machine shop, toolroom, and quality control applications. It covers a range of 0 to 0.5 inches with a graduation of 0.0005 inches per division, making it suitable for tight-tolerance inspection work. The 2-1/4 inch diameter white dial features a no-glare satin finish and a sharp bezel for clear reading under shop lighting. The stem is stainless steel at 0.375 inches in diameter, and the indicator uses a jeweled bearing for smooth, repeatable spindle travel. A revolution counter tracks full cycles across the total range.
This indicator is intended for use in metrology and inspection setups where a drop-style indicator is required. Typical applications include surface plate inspection, fixture checking, machine tool setup, and runout measurement on lathes and mills. The lug back mount makes it compatible with standard indicator holders and magnetic base arms. A flat back is included for alternate mounting configurations. The 0.05 inches per revolution travel rate and 0-50 dial reading scale are standard for this class of indicator, allowing straightforward reading without conversion.
Designed as a standard drop indicator for use with conventional lug back indicator holders, magnetic bases, and surface plate stands common in toolroom and inspection environments. The 0.375 inch stem diameter is a widely accepted standard for this indicator class.
Installation is performed by machinists, toolroom technicians, or quality control inspectors using a compatible indicator holder or magnetic base. Ensure the stem is clamped securely without overtightening, which can distort the stem and affect accuracy. Always zero the indicator against a known reference surface before taking measurements. Handle the spindle with care to avoid side-loading, which can damage the jeweled bearing over time.
