The STARRETT 50968 is a mechanical outside micrometer designed for precise dimensional measurement of small workpieces. It delivers a measurement range of 0 to 0.5 inches with a graduation of 0.0001 inches and an accuracy of 0.000050 inches, making it a reliable tool for quality control and close-tolerance work in machining, fabrication, and maintenance applications. The ratchet stop thimble provides consistent measuring force with each use, reducing operator-to-operator variation. Solid carbide measuring faces resist wear during repeated use. The satin chrome finish reduces glare under shop lighting. A ring-type lock nut secures the spindle once a measurement is taken.
The STARRETT 50968 suits machinists, tool and die technicians, maintenance mechanics, and quality inspectors working in manufacturing, HVAC equipment fabrication, or general trade shops. It is appropriate for any application requiring accurate outside diameter or thickness measurements at or below 0.5 inches. The flat anvil design handles round stock, flat stock, and small component dimensions equally well in both production and bench-measurement scenarios.
Designed as a standard mechanical outside micrometer suitable for general outside measurement tasks requiring a 0 to 0.5 inch range and 0.0001 inch resolution.
No power source or wiring is required. Before use, verify the micrometer reads zero with the anvil and spindle faces clean and fully closed, using the supplied lock nut and a standard micrometer wrench to adjust the thimble if needed. Store the tool with a small gap between anvil and spindle to prevent thermal expansion damage. Calibrate periodically against a certified gauge block in accordance with your shop quality program.
