The STARRETT 12563 is a horizontal-style dial test indicator built for precision measurement in trade and industrial applications. Part of the Series 3909, it features a jeweled bearing movement and a precision gear-driven design that delivers repeatable readings across a 0.8 mm total range. The 0-40-0 balanced dial is printed in high-contrast yellow on a 1-9/16 inch diameter face with a satin chrome finish, making it easy to read in low-light or busy shop environments. Dial graduation is 0.01 mm per division. The unit ships with two dovetail clamps, a contact point, and a case, and is installed by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and precision measurement professionals.
The STARRETT 12563 suits surface plate work, fixture setups, machine tool alignment, and runout inspection on lathes, mills, and grinders. The narrow body design allows access in tight setups where a standard plunger-type indicator cannot reach. The contact point reverses automatically, allowing bidirectional measurement without repositioning the indicator body. The adjustable and replaceable contact point extends service life and accommodates varied workpiece geometries. This indicator is appropriate for both shop-floor production checks and toolroom-grade inspection tasks.
Designed for use with standard dovetail-style indicator holders and magnetic base arms. Two dovetail clamps are included. Compatible with fixtures and setups requiring a horizontal-style dial test indicator with a 4 mm ball diameter contact point.
Installation is performed by machinists or metrology technicians. Secure the dovetail shank firmly in the clamp or holder before zeroing the indicator to prevent drift during measurement. De-energize and lock out any machine tool before mounting the indicator on moving axes or spindles. Avoid side-loading the contact point beyond the rated measurement range, as this can damage the jeweled movement.
