The STARRETT 12331 is a horizontal-style dial test indicator designed for high-precision measurement work in machine shops, tool rooms, and metrology applications. It features a jeweled bearing movement and a precision gear-driven design that delivers reliable readings down to 0.0001 inch graduation. The white dial face measures 1.25 inches in diameter and uses a 0-5-0 bidirectional scale, making it easy to read deflection in either direction. The dovetail mount style allows secure attachment to standard indicator holders and magnetic bases. This indicator is installed and used by machinists, quality control technicians, and precision tool and die professionals.
The STARRETT 12331 is suited for surface runout checks, part alignment, and machine setup tasks on mills, lathes, and surface plates. The narrow body and horizontal style make it well-adapted for reaching into tight setups where a standard plunger-type indicator would not fit. The contact point reverses automatically, and the contact is both adjustable and replaceable, extending service life. The unit ships with two dovetail clamps, a contact point, and a protective case, making it ready for immediate use on the bench or at the machine.
Designed as a Series 3808 OEM-style horizontal dial test indicator for use with standard dovetail-style indicator holders and magnetic base arms common in machine tool and metrology setups.
Installation is performed by machinists and metrology technicians using a compatible dovetail clamp or holder arm. Ensure the workpiece and machine are secured and spindle rotation is stopped before positioning the indicator. Avoid side-loading the contact tip beyond the rated range, as this can damage the jeweled movement. Follow ASME B89 and applicable shop standards for indicator calibration and setup verification intervals.
