Square D CC196.0 thermal unit is designed to protect motors, controllers, and branch circuit conductors from overheating due to prolonged motor overcurrents, including locked rotor currents. It ensures that the motor and branch circuit components are safeguarded from excessive currents, which can be caused by short circuits or grounds. Class 20 thermal units comply with specific trip curves and will trip in twenty seconds or less when overload conditions occur. The single-piece construction facilitates efficient operation, allowing motor current to pass through a heating element within the thermal unit. Under overload conditions, heat causes a solder to melt, which allows a ratchet wheel to release and open the control circuit contacts, effectively disconnecting the motor.
