The SPI Z3090 is a ball-type CMM stylus designed for use with coordinate measuring machines in dimensional inspection and metrology applications. It features a 2 mm ruby ball tip threaded onto an M2 stylus shank with an overall length of 10 mm. Ruby is the standard material of choice for CMM ball styli due to its hardness, low wear rate, and dimensional consistency over repeated contact cycles. This stylus is a consumable-grade replacement component installed by metrology technicians and quality control personnel on CMM probe assemblies in production and inspection environments.
The Z3090 is suited for close-tolerance dimensional inspection on CMM setups where a compact 2 mm ball diameter and short 10 mm overall length are required. Typical applications include tight-feature measurement, bore inspection, and general surface probing on parts where stylus reach and ball size must match the feature geometry. The M2 thread interface is a widely used standard in CMM probe and extension systems.
Designed as a standard M2-thread replacement ball stylus for CMM probe assemblies accepting a 2 mm ruby ball tip on an M2 interface.
CMM styli are installed and exchanged by metrology technicians or quality control personnel. Power down or place the CMM in a safe parked position before changing stylus components to avoid collision damage to the probe head. Handle ruby ball styli carefully to prevent chipping the ball tip, as physical damage will invalidate calibration. After installation, re-qualify the stylus using the CMM calibration sphere before resuming measurement routines.
