The SPI MS180905008 is a magnetic indicator base designed to hold dial indicators, test indicators, and similar precision measuring instruments securely during inspection and measurement tasks. The base uses a permanent magnet with 300 N (67.4 lbf) of magnetic pull to lock onto ferrous machine surfaces, surface plates, and workholding fixtures. The base measures 1.9685 inches in length and 4.5 pounds, providing stable footing during use. An articulating post and rod system extends to a rod length of approximately 5.9 inches, allowing the attached indicator to be positioned at a wide range of angles and heights. Machinists, quality control technicians, and tool-and-die professionals rely on this type of base for setup, runout checks, and in-process measurement.
This indicator base is suited for use in machine shops, toolrooms, and manufacturing environments where repeatable indicator positioning on ferrous surfaces is required. It mounts to lathes, milling machines, grinders, surface plates, and similar ferrous machine components. The strong magnetic pull ensures the base stays fixed under normal vibration and repositioning loads encountered in production settings. The articulating arm and rod allow the user to position an attached indicator over or around workpieces without shifting the base.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use magnetic base for standard dial indicators and test indicators mounted on ferrous machine surfaces and surface plates.
Placement requires a clean, flat ferrous surface free of oil, chips, and debris to achieve full rated magnetic pull. Before activating the magnet, confirm the surface can safely accept the clamping force without distorting thin or delicate workpieces. Tighten all articulating joints firmly before taking measurements to eliminate arm drift. Demagnetize or store the base away from sensitive electronic measuring equipment when not in use.
