The SPI ABB is a mechanical edge finder used in machining to precisely locate the edge of a workpiece on milling machines and machining centers. With a 0.5 inch head diameter and a 0.5 inch shank diameter, this single-end tool fits standard milling collets and drill chucks. The cylindrical contact head engages the workpiece surface, and when the spindle centerline aligns with the workpiece edge, an audible alert signals the offset point. Machinists rely on this type of tool to set accurate X and Y zero references before beginning a cut, reducing setup time and improving positional accuracy without requiring electronic or battery-powered instruments.
The SPI ABB edge finder is suited for use in manual mills and CNC machining centers during workpiece setup operations. It is a standard shop tool for tool-and-die work, fixture building, prototype machining, and production setups. The mechanical, audible-alert design makes it a reliable choice in shop environments where simplicity and repeatability are priorities. It is typically used by machinists and CNC operators on ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The 0.5 inch shank fits common collet sizes found in both manual Bridgeport-style mills and CNC vertical machining centers.
Designed as a standard mechanical edge finder for use in milling machines and machining centers that accept a 0.5 inch shank toolholder or collet.
Install the shank into a collet or drill chuck rated for the 0.5 inch diameter and tighten securely before use. Run the spindle at a low RPM, typically in the range recommended for mechanical edge finders, and approach the workpiece edge slowly with gentle lateral feed. Do not apply lateral force that exceeds the contact engagement point, as this can damage the finder or alter the offset reading. Always zero the machine axis only after confirming consistent, repeatable audible contact indication.
