The SPI 98-322-1 is a mechanical edge finder used to locate the precise edge of a workpiece on a milling machine or machining center. The tool operates without batteries or electronics, relying on a spring-loaded cylindrical contact tip to detect edge position through tactile deflection. It delivers a repeatability of 0.0002 inches (5 micrometers), making it suitable for setup work where consistent reference points are critical. With a 0.2-inch head diameter and a 0.5-inch shank diameter, it fits standard collets and tool holders found in most vertical milling setups. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users.
This edge finder is designed for use in machine shop environments where accurate workpiece location is required before cutting operations begin. It is appropriate for both production and jobbing shop settings, including manual mills and CNC machines with manual setup routines. The single-end configuration keeps the tool compact and easy to handle during setup. Its mechanical operation means no power source is needed and function is not affected by coolant mist or electrical interference in the work area.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard tooling addition for vertical milling machines and machining centers accepting a 0.5-inch shank tool holder or collet.
Installed by a machinist or setup technician during workpiece location prior to cutting. Secure the shank in a collet or end mill holder rated for a 0.5-inch shank and verify that runout is within acceptable limits before use. Spindle speed should be set to a low RPM consistent with mechanical edge finder operating requirements. Always bring the edge finder into contact with the workpiece slowly and under controlled feed to avoid damaging the contact tip.
