The SIMPSON STRONG-TIE RTU2 is an 18-gauge galvanized steel rigid tie connector designed to join two 2x wood members crossing at a 90-degree angle. It provides a mechanical connection at the intersection point, transferring load and resisting racking forces across the joint. Licensed contractors, framers, and structural repair professionals install this hardware wherever intersecting lumber members require a positive mechanical tie. The galvanized steel construction resists corrosion in standard interior framing applications. Installation requires two SD8 x 1.25 screws into the post member and four SD8 x 1.25 screws into the joist member for a total of six fasteners per connector.
The RTU2 is suited for residential framing, lattice construction, and structural repair work where two 2x lumber members cross at a right angle and require reinforcement. It is commonly used in deck substructure repairs, partition framing tie-ins, and lattice panel framing where rigid intersections are required. Home repair applications involving cross-member reinforcement are also a typical use case for this connector. Each connector is sold individually and is sized specifically for standard dimensional 2x lumber.
Designed for use with standard dimensional 2x lumber members intersecting at 90 degrees. Requires SD8 x 1.25 screws for proper installation per manufacturer guidance.
Installation is performed by qualified framers, carpenters, or general contractors following applicable building codes. Before installing in a load-bearing application, confirm that the connector placement and fastener schedule meet local structural requirements. Use only the specified SD8 x 1.25 screws — substituting fastener type or size may compromise the rated connection. Position the connector squarely over the intersection before driving fasteners to ensure full bearing on both members.
