The SIMPSON STRONG TIE BC40Z is an 18-gauge galvanized steel post cap engineered for 4x4 structural lumber connections. It serves a dual function: securing the top of a wood post to a beam or header while eliminating the need for end-grain nailing, which weakens the joint. The Z-Max coating provides an elevated level of corrosion resistance compared to standard G90 galvanizing, making this cap well-suited for exterior and pressure-treated lumber applications. Structural contractors, framers, and deck builders use this hardware where code-compliant post-to-beam connections are required and long-term performance in exposed conditions is a priority.
The BC40Z is used in residential and light commercial framing where 4x4 posts support decks, pergolas, fences, shade structures, carports, and similar outdoor assemblies. Its design accommodates the post from below and the beam or doubled joist from above, creating a reliable mechanical connection at the top of the post without relying on toenailing into end grain. This package contains 50 caps per unit, suitable for production framing or repetitive deck builds.
Designed as an OEM-style post cap for standard 4x4 nominal dimensional lumber used in residential and light commercial exterior framing assemblies.
Installation is performed by structural framers or carpenters following applicable building codes, including IBC and IRC fastener and connection requirements. Use only the nail size and quantity specified in the SIMPSON STRONG TIE load table for this connector to maintain listed load values. Do not substitute fastener types or quantities, as this will void published load ratings. Inspect pressure-treated lumber contact surfaces and confirm Z-Max compatibility with the specific preservative treatment used before installation.
