The SGS 77173 is a 7-flute solid carbide square end mill designed for high-performance material removal in demanding machining applications. Built from micrograin carbide with a TiN finish, it measures 0.5 inches in diameter with a 1.5-inch length of cut and a 3.25-inch overall length. The variable helix geometry reduces harmonic chatter and promotes smooth chip evacuation during aggressive cuts. The straight cylindrical shank measures 0.5 inches in diameter and is held to an h6 tolerance for consistent tool holding. This end mill is installed by machinists and tool-room professionals operating CNC mills and conventional knee mills.
The SGS 77173 is suited for milling ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, aluminum alloys, high-temp alloys, and titanium, corresponding to ISO material groups H, K, M, N, P, and S. It performs well in side milling, slotting, and profiling operations where vibration control and tool life are priorities. The right-hand cut, right-hand spiral flute configuration and 37-degree helix angle make it appropriate for both climb and conventional milling strategies on rigid setups.
The SGS 77173 belongs to the Series 77 product line and is compatible with ISO material groups H, K, M, N, P, and S as specified by the manufacturer. It fits any standard 0.5-inch tool holder or collet system accepting a straight cylindrical shank.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle fully de-energized and locked out before tool changes. Ensure the shank is fully seated and properly torqued in the tool holder per the holder manufacturer specifications. This end mill is not center-cutting and must be ramped or helically interpolated into the workpiece — do not plunge straight down. Inspect the cutting edges and TiN coating for wear or chipping at regular intervals to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
