The SGS 70485 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for high-performance milling in demanding industrial and production machining environments. Built on SGS Series 7 geometry, this tool features a 5/8 inch cutting diameter, a 3 inch length of cut, and a 6 inch overall length, placing it in the extra-long category for reach-critical applications. The AlTiN coating provides elevated heat resistance and surface hardness, extending tool life in dry or semi-dry cutting conditions. Four spiral flutes with a variable index configuration reduce harmonic chatter and improve chip evacuation. The 38-degree helix angle is optimized for aggressive material removal rates while maintaining edge stability. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in job shops and production facilities are the primary installers.
The SGS 70485 is suited for milling operations on a broad range of workpiece materials, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and high-temperature alloys, as indicated by the primary material codes P, M, K, H, and S. The extra-long reach and 3 inch length of cut make it well-suited for deep-pocket milling, step milling, and slotting operations where standard-length tools cannot access the feature. Its centercutting capability allows direct plunge entry without a pre-drilled pilot hole.
Compatible with standard CNC machining centers and manual mills accepting a 5/8 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for use on workpiece materials corresponding to ISO material groups P (steel), M (stainless steel), K (cast iron), H (hardened materials), and S (high-temperature alloys).
This tool should be installed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator familiar with carbide end mill handling and runout tolerances. Secure the shank in a collet or end mill holder to the manufacturer-specified retention torque using a calibrated torque wrench; verify TIR does not exceed acceptable limits before initiating a cut. AlTiN-coated carbide tools are not recommended for use on aluminum or magnesium alloys. Inspect the cutting edges and coating condition before each use; do not run a chipped or damaged tool.
