The SGS 70479 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for high-performance milling in demanding machining applications. It features a 3/8 inch cutting diameter, a 1-3/4 inch length of cut, and a 4-inch overall length, placing it in the extra-long category for extended reach operations. The four-flute, right-hand spiral design is paired with an AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) finish, which improves heat resistance and tool life in high-speed and dry machining conditions. The variable index geometry reduces harmonic vibration during cutting, and the centercutting capability allows for plunge entry. This end mill is used by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in precision CNC milling applications.
The SGS 70479 is suited for milling a broad range of materials including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, carbon and alloy steels, and high-temperature superalloys, as indicated by the primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, P, and S. The extra-long length of cut makes it well-suited for deep-pocket milling, slotting, and profiling operations where a standard-length end mill cannot reach. It accepts a standard straight-cylindrical 3/8 inch shank, compatible with a wide range of collet chucks and end mill holders.
The SGS 70479 is part of the SGS Series 7 end mill family and is compatible with materials designated under workpiece codes H, K, M, P, and S, covering hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, carbon and alloy steels, and superalloys. It fits any holder or collet chuck designed for a 3/8 inch straight-cylindrical shank.
Installation and use of this end mill should be performed by qualified machinists familiar with CNC milling equipment and toolholding systems. Before changing tooling, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the control is in a safe state. Verify runout at the collet or end mill holder before beginning a cut, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear. Always follow the machine tool manufacturer and cutting tool manufacturer guidelines for speeds, feeds, and depth of cut for the specific workpiece material.
