The SGS 70478 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in demanding metalworking applications. Built to Series 63 specifications, it features a 3/8 inch cutting diameter, a 1-1/8 inch length of cut, and a 3-inch overall length with a matching 3/8 inch straight-cylindrical shank. The four-flute, spiral configuration with a 38-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation and stable cutting performance. An AlTiN coating adds heat and wear resistance, making this end mill well suited for high-temperature alloy cutting. It is centercutting and uses a variable index geometry to reduce chatter. Installed by machinists and toolroom technicians working in CNC and manual milling setups.
The SGS 70478 is classified as a long-length end mill and targets ferrous and non-ferrous metals across primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, P, and S. These codes correspond to hardened materials, cast iron, stainless and heat-resistant alloys, general steels, and high-temperature superalloys. The right-hand cut and right-hand flute orientation are standard for conventional CNC vertical milling centers and manual knee mills. This tool is a single-end design, so once the cutting end is worn, the tool is replaced rather than reindexed.
Designed for use in standard straight-shank tool holders, collet chucks, and hydraulic chucks accepting a 3/8 inch shank diameter. Compatible with workpiece material codes H, K, M, P, and S as specified by SGS Series 63 application guidelines.
Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe state before loading or unloading the end mill. Seat the shank fully into the collet or tool holder to the recommended grip length before torquing the retention mechanism. Verify runout with a dial indicator after clamping, as excessive runout will accelerate edge wear on a four-flute carbide tool.
