The SGS 70476 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for high-performance milling in demanding production environments. Built on SGS Series 63 geometry, it features a 5/16 inch cutting diameter, a 1-1/8 inch length of cut, and a 3 inch overall length. The 4-flute, spiral-flute configuration with a 38-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation and stable cutting action. The AlTiN coating provides thermal resistance and extended tool life when machining hard and abrasive materials. The variable index design reduces harmonic vibration during deep slotting and profiling passes. Machining centers and CNC mills are the typical platforms for this tool, installed by machinists and tool room professionals.
The SGS 70476 is suited for milling operations on a wide range of workpiece materials, including stainless steels, titanium and high-temperature alloys, cast iron, hardened steels, and non-ferrous metals, corresponding to material codes H, K, M, P, and S. Its centercutting capability allows plunge entry directly into the workpiece without a pre-drilled hole. The long-series length classification makes it appropriate for applications requiring extended reach beyond standard end mill configurations, such as deep pocket milling and stepped-wall profiling in aerospace, mold and die, and general precision machining work.
Designed for use in standard collet chucks, shrink-fit holders, or end mill holders accepting a 5/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Compatible workpiece materials include stainless steel, titanium alloys, high-temperature alloys, cast iron, hardened steel, and non-ferrous metals (material codes H, K, M, P, S).
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer's toolholding specifications. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe state before loading or unloading the end mill. Seat the shank to the full recommended engagement depth in the holder to prevent pullout under cutting load. Inspect the cutting edges and coating before each use and replace the tool if chipping or edge wear is observed.
