The SGS 70473 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in demanding metalworking applications. Built to Series 63 specifications, it features a 3/16-inch cutting diameter with an extra-long 1-1/8-inch length of cut, making it well suited for deep-pocket and slotting operations where reach matters. The AlTiN coating improves heat resistance and tool life when cutting hard or abrasive materials. With four flutes, a 38-degree spiral helix, and a variable index design, this end mill delivers smooth chip evacuation and reduced chatter at the cutting edge. It is a centercutting tool, allowing plunge entry without a pre-drilled pilot hole. Machinists and toolroom professionals working with compatible work materials will find this tool a direct fit for close-tolerance work.
The SGS 70473 is rated for use across multiple workpiece material categories, including steels (P), stainless steels (M), cast irons (K), hardened materials (H), and superalloys (S). Its extra-long length of cut makes it appropriate for deep cavity milling, contour profiling, and side-milling operations on CNC machining centers and manual knee mills alike. The straight-cylindrical shank seats reliably in standard ER collets and end mill holders sized for 3/16-inch tooling.
Compatible with workpiece materials coded H, K, M, P, and S per SGS Series 63 material classification. Fits standard 3/16-inch ER collets and end mill holders with a straight-cylindrical shank interface.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists using appropriate collet chucks or end mill holders rated for the shank diameter. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked before tooling changes. Confirm runout is within acceptable tolerance after seating the tool, as micrograin carbide is sensitive to side-loading from misalignment. Follow the machine tool manufacturer guidelines and applicable shop safety procedures for speed and feed selection based on workpiece material and depth of cut.
