The SGS 66490 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit with a 17/64 inch (0.2656 inch) diameter and a 137-degree drill point angle. Designed for high-performance drilling in a wide range of workpiece materials, it features a right-hand cut, regular spiral flute geometry, and a straight cylindrical shank. The overall length measures 4.0157 inches. The web-thinned tip and four-margin construction promote accurate hole entry, reduced thrust, and improved hole quality. Installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals, this bit suits CNC drilling centers, drill presses, and manual machine setups where tight tolerances and carbide durability are required.
The SGS 66490 is suited for production drilling applications in metalworking environments where shorter flute length and rigid tool overhang are preferred. Screw machine length geometry provides increased rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, reducing deflection in high-feed or tight-tolerance operations. The Series 142P design with a 3xD flute-to-diameter ratio and coolant-through capability makes it compatible with CNC machining centers that supply internal coolant. It is appropriate for use in steel, aluminum, cast iron, and other universal workpiece materials as described by the manufacturer.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit screw machine length drill bit for CNC machining centers and drill presses accepting a straight cylindrical shank in the 17/64 inch diameter class, conforming to DIN 6537 specification.
This bit is installed by machinists or CNC operators in a standard collet, drill chuck, or hydraulic toolholder rated for the straight shank diameter. Ensure the machine spindle and toolholder are clean and free of runout before seating the bit. When using coolant-through capability, verify that the coolant supply pressure and flow rate are compatible with the machine tool. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping before each use, as carbide is brittle and sensitive to side loads or interrupted cuts.
