The SGS 56031 is a straight-flute solid carbide drill bit designed for precision drilling in ferrous and hardened materials. Sized at No. 31 wire gauge (0.1200 inches in diameter), it features a 140-degree standard point angle and a web-thinned tip geometry that reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation at entry. Manufactured from micrograin carbide and left uncoated for a bright finish, this bit is built to hold tight tolerances — diameter tolerance is held to +0.0000 to -0.0005 inches. With an overall length of 1.875 inches and a flute length of 0.875 inches, it is suited for close-quarter or short-reach drilling applications requiring consistent accuracy.
This drill bit is intended for use in cast iron, steel, and hardened steel workpieces, with secondary suitability for hardened materials. The straight-flute design is preferred over spiral-flute configurations when drilling brittle materials such as cast iron, where chip curl is not needed and a clean shear action reduces the risk of material cracking or breakout. Typical applications include precision hole drilling in tooling, fixture plates, and machined components across manufacturing and metalworking environments. It is sold individually and sized for use in standard collets, chucks, or drill holders that accept a 0.1200-inch shank diameter.
Designed for use with standard collets and drill chucks accepting a 0.1200-inch shank diameter. Intended for machining cast iron, steel, hardened steel, and hardened materials. Conforms to DIN 6539 geometry standards. Series 106.
This bit is installed by machinists or tool-and-die professionals using a compatible collet or drill chuck rated for the 0.1200-inch shank diameter. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and de-energized before changing tooling. Verify runout and chuck seating before drilling to protect the tight diameter tolerance. Do not use coolant-through setups — this bit does not support coolant-through delivery.
