Product Description

The SGS 56022 is a straight-flute, solid carbide drill bit in No. 22 wire size (0.1570 inches diameter) designed for precision drilling in ferrous metals and hard materials. Built from micrograin carbide and left uncoated (bright finish), it features a 140-degree standard point with web thinning for improved penetration and reduced thrust. The two-flute, right-hand cutting geometry suits applications where chip evacuation must be controlled. With an overall length of 2.125 inches and a flute length of 1.0625 inches, this bit is sized for short-reach, high-accuracy work. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die shops, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.

The 56022 is built for drilling cast iron, steel, and hardened steel. Its micrograin carbide construction handles hardened materials that would quickly wear out HSS tooling. The 140-degree point angle reduces walking on entry, making it well-suited for close-tolerance work on machined surfaces. Maximum drilling depth is 0.859 inches. Series 106 geometry conforms to DIN 6539 standards, which governs straight-flute carbide drills for hard and brittle materials.

Key Features

  • No. 22 wire size, 0.1570 inches diameter with a tight tolerance of +0.0000 to -0.0005 inches
  • 140-degree standard point angle with web thinning for lower entry thrust
  • Solid micrograin carbide construction for extended tool life in hard and abrasive materials
  • Straight-flute geometry suited to drilling cast iron and other short-chipping materials
  • Two-flute, right-hand cutting direction
  • Meets DIN 6539 standards for straight-flute carbide drills

Compatibility

Designed for use in cast iron, hardened steel, and general steel workpieces where straight-flute carbide tooling is specified. Compatible with standard drill chucks and CNC machining centers that accept 0.1570-inch shank tooling.

Installation Notes

Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians familiar with carbide drill handling. Carbide is brittle — avoid impact loading, side forces, and interrupted cuts unless the setup is rigid. Secure the workpiece firmly and verify spindle runout before use, as excessive runout accelerates chipping at the cutting edge. Coolant-through is not supported on this bit; apply external coolant or cutting fluid as appropriate for the workpiece material.
