The SGS 51585 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding materials. It carries an AlTiN (Ti-NAMITE-A) coating and a 145-degree split-point geometry with web thinning, which reduces thrust force at entry and promotes self-centering without a center punch. The 5/32-inch (0.1562-inch decimal) cutting diameter is paired with a 1/4-inch straight cylindrical shank, allowing use in standard chucks. With 2 regular spiral flutes and a 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio, the bit handles chip evacuation efficiently in tough alloys. Licensed HVAC and mechanical contractors, machinists, and tool-and-die tradespeople commonly reach for this geometry when drilling temperature-resistant alloys and titanium.
This drill bit is built for production and precision work in titanium and temperature-resistant alloys where standard HSS tooling fails prematurely. The AlTiN coating adds heat resistance and surface hardness, making it appropriate for dry or minimal-lubrication cutting strategies. The Series 135 designation places it in SGS's high-performance carbide lineup. The 3-1/4-inch overall length and 1-1/4-inch flute length suit typical jobber-length hole depths up to approximately 1-5/64 inches. It is sold individually and fits into standard CNC, drill press, and hand-held setups accepting a 1/4-inch shank.

Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tradespeople familiar with carbide tooling. Carbide is brittle — avoid side-loading, interrupted cuts without proper setup, or drop impacts that can chip the cutting edge. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle speed and feed rate are set appropriately for solid carbide in the target material before engaging the cut. Coolant-through is not supported on this bit; use flood coolant or air blast at the entry point when process conditions allow.
