The SGS 51517 is a jobber-length drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in difficult-to-machine materials. Built from micrograin solid carbide and finished with an AlTiN (Ti-NAMITE-A) coating, it handles titanium, temperature alloys, and other demanding workpiece materials where high-speed steel tooling falls short. The 145-degree split point is web-thinned for self-centering entry, reducing walking and thrust requirements on entry. Overall length is 3.625 inches with a 2.0781-inch flute length. The straight cylindrical shank measures 5/16 inch in diameter, matching the drill diameter for direct chuck mounting. This bit is selected by machinists and tool-and-die tradespeople running CNC mills, drill presses, or manual machines in production and job-shop environments.
The SGS 51517 is intended for drilling titanium, temperature alloys, and similarly hard or abrasive materials where carbide tooling is the standard choice. The 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio and regular spiral flute geometry support chip evacuation in these materials without coolant-through capability, making it suitable for flood-coolant or dry-cutting setups depending on shop practice. Maximum drilling depth is 1.7969 inches. The Series 135L designation identifies the product family within the SGS line. This bit is sold individually and suits both production runs and repair or prototype work where precision hole quality in hard alloys is required.
Designed for use in drilling titanium and temperature alloys; primary workpiece materials are listed as Temp Alloy and Titanium per manufacturer specifications. Compatible with any drill press, CNC machining center, or manual mill accepting a 5/16-inch straight shank.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel. Secure the straight shank fully in a three-jaw chuck or collet before operation and verify runout before drilling. Power down and de-energize the machine spindle before changing tooling. Coolant-through is not supported on this bit, so flood coolant or appropriate dry-cutting technique should be applied at the tool-workpiece interface per shop practice and material guidelines.
