The SGS 51079 is a solid carbide jobber length drill bit sized to wire gauge No. 79, with a decimal inch diameter of 0.0145 inches (0.37 mm). It features a 118-degree faceted drill point and a two-flute right-hand spiral cut geometry. The bit is manufactured from micrograin solid carbide and carries a bright, uncoated finish. The shank is straight-cylindrical with a shank diameter matching the drill diameter at 0.0145 inches. Overall length is 0.75 inches with a flute length of 0.1875 inches. Installed by machinists, tooling technicians, and precision fabricators, this bit is built for small-diameter drilling applications requiring tight tolerances and consistent geometry.
The SGS 51079 is suited for drilling composite workpiece materials where small-diameter precision holes are required. The web-thinned, tapered web construction reduces thrust load during entry, improving cut initiation in hard or layered composite substrates. The 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio supports chip evacuation in deep-relative-to-diameter passes. This bit fits production, maintenance, and prototype applications where wire-gauge drill sizes are specified by design drawings or engineering callouts. It conforms to DIN 338 standards and is part of the SGS Series 101 jobber length line.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct application drill bit for use in standard collet chucks, precision drill chucks, or CNC toolholders accepting a 0.0145-inch straight shank. Primary workpiece material specified as composite.
This bit is installed by machinists or precision fabricators using collet-style or precision Jacobs-style chuck holders. Ensure the spindle and toolholder are fully stopped and de-energized before bit changes. At this diameter, excessive feed pressure will snap the bit; use a low-feed, high-RPM strategy consistent with carbide tooling recommendations for composite materials. Handle carbide bits carefully to avoid chipping the flutes or point during storage and setup.
