The SGS 40549 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in a wide range of metalworking and machining applications. It features a 0.3150 inch mill diameter, a 0.7874 inch length of cut, and a three-flute spiral configuration with a 30-degree helix angle. The micrograin carbide construction provides rigidity and wear resistance at elevated cutting speeds. The bright uncoated finish makes it well suited for applications where coating interaction with the workpiece material is a concern. This tool is installed and operated by machinists and CNC technicians working on milling machines and machining centers.
The SGS 40549 is a regular-length, single-end tool in the SGS Series 5M lineup. It is designed for right-hand cut and right-hand flute direction with a straight cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece material codes listed by the manufacturer include H, K, M, N, P, and S, covering material groups such as hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, carbon and alloy steels, and high-temperature alloys. The centercutting capability allows plunge entry into the workpiece. No chipbreaker, variable helix, or variable index geometry is present on this tool.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use solid carbide square end mill for milling machines and CNC machining centers accepting a 0.315 inch straight cylindrical shank. Compatible workpiece material codes per manufacturer data: H, K, M, N, P, S.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC technician. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is powered down before changing tooling. Verify that the tool holder collet or chuck is clean and free of debris before seating the shank, and confirm runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut. Do not exceed manufacturer-recommended speeds and feeds for the specific workpiece material being machined.
