The SGS 38173 is a solid carbide corner radius end mill designed for precision milling in demanding metalworking applications. It features a 3/8 inch diameter, a 1 inch length of cut, and a 0.045 inch corner radius that reduces stress concentration at the cutting edge and extends tool life. The AlTiN (Ti-NAMITE-A) coating provides high heat resistance and hardness, making this tool well-suited for high-speed cutting in tough materials. With 4 flutes and a right-hand spiral flute design, it delivers efficient chip evacuation and a quality surface finish. This end mill is a single-end, Weldon flat shank tool with a 2.5 inch overall length and is used in standard end mill toolholders. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install and operate this tool on CNC machining centers and manual mills.
This end mill is suited for roughing and finishing operations across a broad range of workpiece materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium. It is also rated for secondary use in hard materials. The corner radius geometry makes it particularly effective in applications where sharp inside corners are not required and where edge chipping is a concern, such as profiling, slotting, and peripheral milling in production or job-shop environments. The micrograin carbide substrate and medium helix combine to provide stability at elevated cutting parameters.
Designed for use with standard end mill toolholders. Compatible with primary workpiece materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium, with secondary capability in hard materials per SGS Series 01C application guidelines.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer's toolholder torque and runout specifications. Confirm the Weldon flat shank is fully seated and the setscrew engages the flat before operation. Verify spindle RPM and feed rate are set per the applicable cutting data for the workpiece material before starting the cut. Never exceed the tool's rated cutting diameter or depth of cut without confirming rigidity of the setup.
