The SGS 36420 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for high-performance material removal in demanding machining applications. It features a 5/16 inch (0.3125 inch) cutting diameter with a 13/16 inch (0.8125 inch) length of cut and a 2-1/2 inch overall length. The 4-flute configuration paired with a variable helix and variable index geometry helps reduce chatter and vibration during cutting. An AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) coating provides heat and wear resistance, extending tool life in high-temperature cutting environments. The micrograin carbide substrate contributes to edge retention across a range of workpiece materials. Machinists and CNC operators in job shops and production facilities are the primary users.
The SGS 36420 is suited for milling operations on a broad range of material groups, including hardened steels (H), cast irons (K), stainless steels (M), carbon and alloy steels (P), and high-temperature alloys (S) as designated by ISO material codes. The straight-cylindrical shank allows straightforward toolholder setup in standard collet chucks, shrink-fit holders, and hydraulic chucks. It is a single-end tool in a regular-length configuration, making it appropriate for most standard depth slots, pockets, and peripheral milling cuts where extended reach is not required.
Designed for use in standard CNC machining centers and manual milling machines accepting a 5/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Compatible with ISO material groups H, K, M, P, and S as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator. Ensure the spindle is fully powered down and the machine is in a safe state before changing tooling. Verify the toolholder is clean and free of debris before seating the shank to maintain runout tolerance. Confirm cutting parameters including speed, feed, and depth of cut are appropriate for the workpiece material and machine rigidity before initiating a cut.
