The SGS 31864 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision material removal in demanding machining applications. Built from micrograin carbide stock, it measures 3/8 inches in mill diameter with a 1-3/4 inch length of cut and a 4-inch overall length, placing it in the extra-long category for extended reach work. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating reduces friction and extends tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. The 4-flute, right-hand spiral configuration with a 30-degree helix angle promotes chip evacuation while delivering a clean finish. Variable index spacing helps suppress chatter during aggressive cuts. This end mill is installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals running CNC mills and manual knee mills.
The SGS 31864 is suited for milling operations involving ferrous metals, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous alloys, and high-temperature superalloys, corresponding to ISO material groups H, K, M, N, P, and S. The extra-long series designation makes it particularly useful when standard-length end mills cannot reach the required depth of cut, such as in deep pockets, tall workpiece setups, or multi-step profiling operations. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard ER and shrink-fit collet systems sized for 3/8-inch shanks. Single-end construction means the tool is replaced rather than reindexed when worn.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or new-installation end mill for CNC machining centers and manual mills accepting a 3/8-inch straight-cylindrical shank, compatible with ISO material groups H, K, M, N, P, and S as specified by SGS Series 1EL designation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is powered down before changing tooling. Seat the straight-cylindrical shank fully into a clean, properly sized collet or chuck and torque the retention nut to the collet manufacturer's specification. Inspect the collet bore and tool shank for chips or wear before each installation to prevent runout that can prematurely dull the cutting edges.
