The SGS 31766 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in demanding metalworking applications. It features a 0.5 inch cutting diameter, a 2 inch length of cut, and a 4-flute spiral configuration with a right-hand cut and right-hand flute direction. The AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) coating improves heat resistance and extends tool life in high-temperature cutting environments. Built from micrograin solid carbide, the 31766 belongs to the Series 1L long-reach line and is suitable for professional machinists and tooling specialists who need extended cutting depth without sacrificing rigidity.
This end mill is engineered for milling operations where a long length of cut is required, such as deep pocket milling, slotting, and profiling. The centercutting design allows plunge entry. A 30-degree helix angle and variable index geometry reduce chatter and improve surface finish across a range of workpiece materials. Primary workpiece material codes include H, K, M, N, P, and S, covering hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous materials, carbon steels, and heat-resistant superalloys.
Compatible with workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S as designated by the supplier, covering a broad range of metals including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous alloys, carbon and alloy steels, and heat-resistant superalloys. Fits standard 0.5 inch straight-cylindrical shank tool holders.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists using a compatible 0.5 inch collet, end mill holder, or shrink-fit tool holder. Verify tool holder runout before use, as excessive runout accelerates flute wear and degrades surface finish. Confirm spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut settings are appropriate for the workpiece material before engaging the cut. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or wear before each use and replace the tool if edge integrity is compromised.
