The SGS 31742 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision material removal in demanding machining applications. It features a 7/16 inch (0.4375 inch) cutting diameter, a 2 inch length of cut, and a 4-1/2 inch overall length. The tool carries a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) finish that improves surface hardness and wear resistance. With four flutes, a 30-degree helix angle, and a variable index design, it is built for efficient chip evacuation and stable cutting performance. It is installed and operated by machinists and CNC tooling professionals working with milling machines and machining centers.
This end mill is suited for long-reach milling operations where a standard-length tool cannot access the full depth of a feature. The Series 1L designation identifies it as a long-series tool. Primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S indicate suitability across a range of material families including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, carbon steels, and heat-resistant superalloys. It is centercutting, allowing plunge entry directly into the workpiece without a pre-drilled starting hole.
Designed as a direct-fit tooling solution for CNC milling machines and machining centers accepting a 7/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Compatible with workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S as designated by the SGS Series 1L product line.
This tool is installed and used by machinists in a milling machine or CNC machining center with an appropriate collet or tool holder sized for a 7/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Verify runout and tool holder clamping force before operation to protect the cutting edge. Shank diameter tolerance is +0.00000 / -0.00035 inches, so only use precision-grade collets or holders to maintain concentricity. Follow shop-standard feeds, speeds, and coolant practices appropriate for the workpiece material.
