Product Description

The SGS 31731 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in demanding metalworking applications. With a 3/8-inch cutting diameter, 1-1/8-inch length of cut, and four flutes in a 30-degree right-hand spiral configuration, this tool delivers clean, accurate cuts in a wide range of workpiece materials. The micrograin carbide substrate provides hardness and wear resistance, while the Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating reduces friction and extends tool life. The variable index geometry helps break up harmonic chatter during aggressive cuts. At 3 inches overall length, this long-series end mill suits setups where added reach is required. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install this tool in CNC machining centers and manual mills.

The SGS 31731 is suited for both roughing and finishing passes in materials spanning steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, high-temp alloys, and other machinable materials corresponding to ISO material groups H, K, M, N, P, and S. The long-series 1L designation makes it appropriate for pocketing, slotting, and profiling operations where standard-length tools cannot reach. It is centercutting, allowing plunge entry. Single-end design means the tool is replaced when the cutting end is worn. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard collet chucks and end mill holders with a 3/8-inch bore.

Key Features

  • Solid micrograin carbide construction for hardness and dimensional stability
  • TiN coating reduces friction and extends cutting tool life
  • Variable index flute spacing reduces harmonic chatter during cuts
  • 30-degree right-hand helix, right-hand cutting direction
  • Centercutting design allows direct plunge entry into workpiece
  • Long-series (1L) overall length of 3 inches provides extended reach

Compatibility

Designed as a direct-fit replacement or standard tooling selection for CNC machining centers and manual milling machines equipped with 3/8-inch collet chucks, end mill holders, or compatible tool holders accepting a straight cylindrical shank.

Installation Notes

Installation is performed by qualified machinists following standard tooling setup procedures. Ensure the spindle is fully de-energized and locked out before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully in the collet or end mill holder to the minimum recommended insertion depth before tightening. Inspect the collet and holder bore for wear or runout before use, as excessive runout accelerates tool wear and reduces surface finish quality.
