The SGS 31728 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in metalworking and machining operations. Built to Series 1L long-length standards, it features a 0.1875 inch (3/16 inch) cutting diameter, a 0.75 inch length of cut, and a 2.5 inch overall length. The four-flute geometry with a 30-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth surface finishes. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating increases surface hardness and extends tool life in demanding cutting conditions. This end mill is centercutting and carries a variable index design, making it suitable for plunge, slot, and peripheral milling operations. Machinists and CNC operators in job shops, production facilities, and tool rooms install and run this tool.
The SGS 31728 is rated for use across a broad range of workpiece materials, including cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, heat-resistant alloys, steel, and super alloys, corresponding to material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard collet chucks and end mill holders. The long series (1L) length makes it well suited for applications requiring extended reach into pockets, slots, or stepped features where a standard-length end mill would not clear the workpiece. Right-hand flute direction and right-hand cut orientation are standard for conventional CNC milling setups.
Rated for workpiece materials classified under codes H (cast iron), K (non-ferrous), M (stainless steel), N (non-metallic and aluminum alloys), P (steel), and S (heat-resistant and super alloys). Straight-cylindrical shank is compatible with standard ER collets, end mill holders, and milling chucks sized for 3/16 inch shank diameter.
Installation and operation of this end mill should be performed by qualified machinists or CNC operators familiar with proper toolholding and speeds-and-feeds practices. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool holder is clean and free of debris before seating the shank. Verify runout with a dial indicator before committing to finish cuts. Always consult the machine tool manufacturer and applicable shop safety protocols when selecting cutting parameters.
