The SGS 31617 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision material removal in milling operations. Built from micrograin carbide, it delivers consistent edge integrity and dimensional accuracy across a wide range of workpiece materials. The 4-flute, right-hand spiral configuration with a 30-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. The variable index design reduces harmonic vibration during cuts, contributing to better surface finish. At 0.375 inches in diameter with a 0.625-inch length of cut and a 2.0-inch overall length, this stub-length tool is suited for rigid setups where reach is not the primary concern. It is installed and used by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in CNC and manual milling applications.
The SGS 31617 is intended for use in stub-length milling applications where rigidity and accuracy are priorities. Its centercutting geometry allows plunge entry, adding flexibility to slotting and pocket milling operations. The primary workpiece material codes cover a broad spectrum: H, K, M, N, P, and S material groups, which correspond to hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous materials, carbon and alloy steels, and heat-resistant superalloys. It is well suited for general-purpose machining in job shop, production, and maintenance environments running ferrous and non-ferrous stock.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard tooling option for stub-length square end mill applications across CNC machining centers and manual knee mills accepting a 3/8-inch straight shank.
Installation is performed by machinists using a collet chuck, end mill holder, or Weldon-style holder matched to the 3/8-inch shank diameter. Ensure the spindle and machine are fully powered down and locked out before changing tooling. Verify shank seating depth and runout with a dial indicator before commencing cuts. Follow shop-standard torque procedures for the holder type in use.
