The SGS 31461 is a double-end, square-profile solid carbide end mill designed for precision milling in a wide range of metalworking applications. It features a 3/16 inch cutting diameter, a 3/8 inch length of cut, and a 2 inch overall length. The tool is ground from micrograin carbide stock and finished with a TiN coating to extend tool life and reduce friction at the cutting edge. With four flutes and a 30-degree right-hand spiral helix, it delivers efficient chip evacuation and smooth surface finishes. The double-end design provides two usable cutting ends, making it a practical choice for high-volume shops watching tooling costs.
This end mill is suited for milling operations on a broad range of workpiece materials, including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless and heat-resistant alloys, non-ferrous metals, and structural materials — consistent with its primary workpiece material codes covering material categories H, K, M, N, P, and S. It fits into standard CNC machining centers, knee mills, and manual milling machines that accept a 3/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank. The stub length classification keeps the tool rigid and minimizes deflection in short-reach setups where chatter and runout are concerns.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or standard tooling option for any machine spindle or collet system accepting a 3/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank, consistent with Series 14 stub-length square end mill specifications.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully powered down and locked out before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully into the collet or tool holder and torque the retention system to the machine manufacturer's specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning the cut, as runout exceeding acceptable limits will accelerate edge wear and reduce surface finish quality.
