The SGS 31406 is a double-end ball end mill designed for precision milling operations in a wide range of materials. Built from micrograin solid carbide, it offers the hardness and edge retention needed for demanding cuts in metals and composites. The tool measures 0.0625 inches in diameter with a 0.125-inch length of cut and a 1.5-inch overall length. Four flutes with a 30-degree right-hand spiral helix provide efficient chip evacuation and a smooth finish. This is a stub-length tool with an uncoated finish, suited for applications where tight tolerances and controlled chip flow are priorities. Licensed machinists and CNC operators are the primary installers and users of this end mill.
The SGS 31406 is suited for milling operations across a broad spectrum of workpiece materials, including cast irons, non-ferrous metals, stainless steels, heat-resistant alloys, and non-metallic materials. Its double-end configuration provides two usable cutting ends, extending tool life between changeovers. The stub length and 0.125-inch shank diameter make it well matched to tight-tolerance slots, pockets, and contour work in CNC machining centers and manual mills where minimal overhang is required.
The SGS 31406 is rated for use with primary workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S, covering cast irons, non-ferrous metals, stainless steels, high-temperature alloys, steel, and non-metallic materials. It belongs to SGS Series 14B.
This end mill is installed and operated by machinists or CNC programmers in a collet or end mill holder sized for a 0.125-inch shank. Confirm runout and tool holder concentricity before operation, as small-diameter carbide tools are sensitive to vibration and misalignment. Never exceed the tool manufacturer's recommended feed and speed parameters for the workpiece material. Inspect both cutting ends before each use and replace the tool if chipping or wear is detected.
