The SGS 31245 is a 4-flute, solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling in a wide range of metalworking applications. It features a 5/16 inch diameter with a matching 5/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank and a 1/2 inch length of cut. The stub-length profile keeps the tool rigid under load, reducing deflection during aggressive cuts. A TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating improves surface hardness and wear resistance. The 30-degree spiral flute geometry and right-hand cut with right-hand flute direction promote efficient chip evacuation. Variable index spacing helps suppress chatter on harder materials. This tool is installed and operated by machinists and CNC programmers in job shop and production environments.
The SGS 31245 is suited for milling ferrous and non-ferrous metals, high-temperature alloys, and composite materials. Its workpiece material codes cover cast iron, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, non-metallic materials, carbon and alloy steels, and heat-resistant superalloys. The centercutting design allows plunge entry, making it usable for slot milling, profiling, and pocketing operations. The stub-length form keeps overhang minimal, which is especially useful in tight setups or shallow-pocket work where rigidity matters most.
Designed as an OEM-style solid carbide square end mill compatible with standard straight-bore tool holders, collet chucks, and shrink-fit holders accepting a 5/16 inch shank diameter.
Installation is performed by a machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before changing tooling. Seat the shank fully into the collet or tool holder and torque the retention mechanism to the holder manufacturer specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear and reduces surface finish quality.
