The SGS 31189 is a double-end, square-profile end mill ground from micrograin solid carbide and finished with an AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) coating. It features a 1/2 inch cutting diameter, a 5/8 inch length of cut, and a 30-degree right-hand helix. With four spiral flutes and a straight cylindrical shank, this tool is built for rigidity and heat resistance in demanding milling operations. At 3 inches overall length and stub classification, it offers the stiffness needed for accurate slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals reach for this geometry when material removal rates and tool life both matter.
The SGS 31189 is suited for milling a broad range of workpiece materials classified under industry material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S - covering hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, carbon steels, and high-temperature alloys. The double-end design extends tool value by providing two usable cutting ends. Stub length geometry keeps deflection minimal in close-tolerance work on vertical and horizontal machining centers, as well as manual knee mills.
The SGS 31189 is compatible with workpiece materials designated under material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S, including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, carbon steels, and high-temperature alloys. It is designed for use in standard straight-shank tool holders and collet systems accepting a 1/2 inch shank diameter.
This end mill is installed by machinists and CNC operators using an ER collet chuck, end mill holder, or equivalent straight-shank tool holder. Verify holder runout before use, as excessive runout accelerates edge wear on carbide tooling. Power down and lock out the spindle before changing tools. Follow machine manufacturer guidelines for speed and feed selection based on workpiece material and depth of cut.
